Ans. The historical or commercial importance of the Khyber Pass is that for thousands of years it is like a crossroad. People have to pass through this valley whether they go to east or to the west.

Q: 2  What is the Khyber Pass? How long is it? Name the highest place along the Khyber Pass?


Ans. The Khyber Pass is a narrow mountain valley. It is about fifty kilometer long. We go to Afghanistan through this pass. Landi kotal is the highest place along the Pass. From Landi kotal, the road goes down winding through the beautiful scenery towards Torkham.

Q: 3 Has the Khyber Pass been used as a trade? What did the camel caravans carry?


Ans. The Khyber Pass has been used as a famous trade route. Formerly, camel caravans passed through it. They carried bales of cotton, silk and spices from  India and China to Afghanistan and beyond.

Q:4 Where is Torkham? What did the student see there and who welcomed them?


Ans. Torkham is the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. They saw a chain stretched across the road and the Pakistan flag flying on a hit. They were welcomed by the soldiers guarding the frontier.

Ans. They thought of the brave soldiers of Mahmood, Baber and Abdali riding along this beautiful Pass. They also thought of the caravans which once carried carpets, silks, spices and through the Khyber Pass.
