Text Book Exercise 4

Active Voice and Passive Voice

The passive form is commonly used in textbooks, in scientific, technical, and business reports, and in newspapers.
In some cases, ‘by’ may be used to clarify who the doer is; in other cases, the doer may just be implied. It is generally omitted when it is obvious who the ‘doer’ is.

Example:
The house is being painted.

Active and Passive Voice

We use passive voice when:

  1. We don’t know the agent.
(ہم کام کرنے والے فرد کو نہیں جانتے ہیں۔)

  2. We don’t want to mention the agent.
(ہم کام کرنے والے فرد کا ذکر نہیں کرنا چاہتے ہیں۔)

Pattern:
be (form) + V(pp)

طریقہ:
Passive Voice بنانے کے اصول:

  1. The subject of the active voice becomes the object of the passive voice.
(active voice کا فاعل passive voice کا مفعول بن جاتا ہے۔)

  2. The object of the active voice becomes the subject of the passive voice.
(active voice کا مفعول passive voice کا فاعل بن جاتا ہے۔)

  3. We use the form of ‘be’ according to the tense of the active voice.
(ہم 'be' فارم کو active voice کے ٹینس کے مطابق استعمال کرتے ہیں۔)

  4. We always use the past participle (pp) of the verb in the passive voice.
(verb past participle کا passive voice میں استعمال ہوتا ہے۔)

  5. We can omit the agent (the subject of the active voice) in the passive voice if it is a pronoun or it is unimportant.
(ہم active voice کے فاعل کو passive voice میں چھوڑ سکتے ہیں اگر وہ ضمیر ہو یا اہم نہ ہو۔)

01. Passive Voice of Present Indefinite Tense:

Note: The form of ‘be’ (am) was already present, but we changed it into “are” because of the subject.

09. Passive with Modal Auxiliaries:

  • Modal auxiliaries or simply modals are:
will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, might, must, have to, has to, had to, ought to, had better, etc.

Passive: The letters can be typed by her.

Active: They should not do it.

With its presence across Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Hyderabad, Larkana, and Dubai, SZABIST has grown into a dynamic institution that attracts students from across Pakistan and beyond

Admission to SZABIST can be competitive, especially due to its rigorous SZABIST Admission Test, which serves as the primary gateway to its prestigious undergraduate and graduate programs. This article merges essential insights about the admission process, test structure, preparation tips, and key deadlines to guide prospective students toward successful admission.

SZABIST Admission Process Overview

SZABIST admissions are typically open in two main cycles: Spring and Fall. For the Fall 2025 session, admissions began in January 2025 with aptitude tests scheduled around March, followed by interviews and the final merit list announcement by April. Classes usually commence in September.

If you're looking for upcoming Spring 2025 admissions, SZABIST's admissions portal and announcements will provide exact dates, but generally, they begin in October or November. This ensures students have enough time to apply, prepare for entry tests, and complete the documentation process.

SZABIST’s admission process follows a structured pathway to ensure a fair and transparent selection of candidates for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Below is a brief breakdown of each step in the process

1. Application Submission

Applicants must create an account on the SZABIST admissions portal and fill in personal, academic, and program-related details. Key documents include:

  • Academic transcripts (Matric/O-Level, Intermediate/A-Level, Bachelor's degree if applicable)
  • CNIC/B-form copy
  • Passport (for foreign applicants)
  • Photographs

Deadlines vary by the semester, with applications typically opening for Fall admissions in April and Spring admissions in October.

What is the SZABIST Admission Test?

The SZABIST Admission Test is designed to ensure students meet the institute's academic standards. It assesses various skills required to thrive in academic programs, including verbal reasoning, quantitative aptitude, analytical reasoning, and general knowledge

The test is mandatory for programs such as:

  • BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration)
  • BS Computer Science
  • BS Media Sciences
  • BS Social Sciences

In some cases, graduate programs like MBA or MS also require interviews or group discussions in addition to the test.

Test Structure: What to Expect

Admission Test Pattern (Example: BBA Program)

  • Total Time: 90 minutes
  • Total Marks: 100 (No negative marking)
  • Sections:
    • Verbal Reasoning (synonyms, antonyms, sentence completion, comprehension)
    • Quantitative Skills (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, word problems)
    • Analytical Reasoning (logical puzzles, data interpretation)
    • General Knowledge (current affairs, science, and technology)

Minimum Eligibility for Undergraduate Programs:

  • Intermediate or A-levels with 50% marks or equivalent. Alternatively, students can submit SAT scores (1650 or above) for exemption from the test

Effective Preparation Strategies

1. Start Early

Begin preparing at least three months in advance to cover all test sections thoroughly. Early preparation ensures time for both revisions and practice tests.

2. Create a Study Schedule

Allocate dedicated hours to different subjects, focusing more on weak areas. Consistency is essential for mastering key concepts.

3. Use Quality Study Materials

Invest in SAT, GMAT, or GRE guides, as these cover similar verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning skills. Online resources and past papers tailored to the SZABIST test format can also help

4. Practice Past Papers

Solving past papers allows candidates to get familiar with the question formats and time limits. Practicing under timed conditions builds confidence and improves speed.

5. Join Study Groups

Collaborating with peers helps in idea exchange, clearing doubts, and staying motivated. Group discussions are especially beneficial for enhancing general knowledge.

Post-Test Process and Interviews

1.      Result Announcement:
Results are announced within two to three weeks after the test date via email and the SZABIST portal.

2.      Interviews (if applicable):
Applicants to programs like MBA or MS may need to appear for interviews or group discussions. These assess the candidate’s motivation, communication skills, and alignment with the program.

3.      Admission Offers and Fee Submission:
Once selected, candidates must submit the required documentation and pay the non-refundable admission fee to confirm their seat.

4.      Orientation and Class Start:
Orientation usually takes place in August, with classes starting in September for the Fall session.

Final Tips for Test Day Success

  • Stay Calm and Confident: Get a good night’s sleep before the test and arrive early at the test center to avoid last-minute stress.
  • Time Management: Monitor your time closely during the test, leaving time for review.

Businesspersons can initiate a business with the click of a button, rather than with the touch of a finger. They can post their products and invite buyers from every nook and corner of the world. They can interact with their customers on a case-by-case basis and readily respond to their queries, comments, and needs. Social media has facilitated online business and the promotion of skills and talents.

Negative Aspects:
One may get cheated by fake virtual companies and organizations. Hence, despite the innumerable benefits of online business, it may be misused by fraudulent companies. People may suffer financial loss by paying for goods that may be of poor quality.

Business (Reducing Negative Impact):

One should be discreet when selecting online products or responding to online offers of jobs and other opportunities.

Students

Positive Aspects:
Social media has opened new vistas for students and professionals, who can easily interact with their counterparts in any part of the world and exchange views on matters of mutual interest. Students can also easily interact with educators and researchers globally and gain knowledge and wisdom from them.

Negative Aspects:
Its injudicious use often results in incomplete school assignments, tardiness, and poor academic performance. Moreover, when students accumulate pending work, they often resort to online distractions, such as social media websites, cutting down their study time. This harms their academic growth and performance. Furthermore, students without access to such services may fall behind in their studies.

Reducing Negative Impact:
Creating a balance between study time and physical activities is essential for achieving academic and personal growth.

Communication with Friends and Family

Positive Aspects:
Social media has not only made constant connection with distant relatives possible, but it has also reconnected long-lost friends and relatives. Thanks to its affordability and accessibility, it has strengthened the bond of love and care among family members living far apart. Today, all family members can participate virtually in events when physical participation isn't possible.

Negative Aspects:
Increased time on social media has limited face-to-face communication, leading to compromised relationships. People now spend more time on social media, resulting in a decline in the quality of one-on-one conversations with both immediate and extended family members. This trend diminishes meaningful interactions that play an important role in Pakistani family culture. Although social networks allow quick interaction with many people, these interactions are often superficial and cannot replace meaningful face-to-face conversations. The lack of quality communication can weaken relationships, with negative consequences over time.

Reducing Negative Impact:
We should limit our time on social media and prioritize real-world interactions with family and friends. Strengthening face-to-face relationships will allow us to share each other’s joys and sorrows more meaningfully.

Promotion of Skills and Talents

Positive Aspects:
Social media has made the promotion of skills and talents very easy, leading to the opening up of innumerable avenues for many people. Skilled and talented individuals no longer need to seek contacts or venture out to showcase their capabilities. They can display their talents and promote their skills and products through virtual platforms, achieving great heights and recognition in their respective fields. Social media allows people to advertise their skills and capabilities, making it easier for employers to find the right candidates for vacant positions.

Negative Aspects:
Those aspiring for good jobs and better opportunities may face physical harm by participating in fake interviews.

Reducing Negative Impact:
One should be discreet when selecting online offers of jobs and other opportunities.

Text Book Exercise 7

Q: Answer the following questions:

  1. How has social media revolutionized the concept of communication?
Ans: Social media has changed the way we communicate and with whom we interact. It allows people to communicate across geography, cultures, and languages, creating a globally interconnected community. Social media makes it possible to connect with friends and relatives in distant places at a much lower cost. Family members can also virtually participate in family events when physical presence is not possible.

  2. How is social media assisting students and professionals in their respective fields?
Ans: Social media has opened new vistas for students and professionals, enabling them to interact with peers worldwide and exchange views on topics of mutual interest. Students can also connect with educators and researchers from different parts of the world, gaining knowledge and insights to enhance their learning.

  3. How can a business be initiated on a virtual platform?
Ans: Social media has emerged as a fast-growing platform for online businesses. Entrepreneurs can start a business with the click of a button, rather than with the touch of a finger. They can post products and invite buyers from across the globe. Through social media, businesses can interact with customers on a case-by-case basis and respond to their queries, comments, and needs.

  4. How can employers hunt for the right candidates for their job positions?

Ans: Skilled and talented people can advertise their skills and capabilities through social media, making it easy for employers to hunt for the right people for any vacant position that they might have. Moreover, employers looking for people with specific qualifications and capabilities can also freely use their social media groups to advertise their vacant positions.                                                                                                                                                                                    5. Why can people easily have a constant connection with relatives in distant parts of the world?

Ans: Social media has not only made a constant connection with distant relatives possible, but it has also helped establish contact with long-lost friends and relatives. Due to its affordability and easy accessibility, it has aided and strengthened the bond of love and care between family members living in distant parts of the world. Today, all family members can virtually participate in any family event in which physical participation is not possible for any reason.

    6. How is social media affecting the relationships of people?

Ans: Humans are social animals, and for strengthening social bonds, the physical sharing of moments of joy and grief is important. Increased time on social media has limited face-to-face communication, leading to weakened relationships. This increased usage has reduced the frequency and quality of close, one-to-one communication between both immediate and extended family members, who occupy an important place in the Pakistani family structure. While social networks enable interaction with a large number of people, these interactions are often shallow and cannot adequately replace everyday face-to-face communication. This lack of quality communication can weaken relationships, which may, in turn, have damaging consequences.

As soon as father comes outside, they all shout with joy. The father knows that his children are looking forward to the trip. He hires a carriage and takes them to the fair.
